Lesson 12

Information Technology in Support of Student-Centered Learning Classroom

            In this lesson, we shall see how the teacher can expand his options to make himself more effective and relevant in the 21st millennium information age. In addition, suggestions shall be made on how a student-centered classroom (SCL) can be supported by information technology (IT).

 Generally the new school classroom environment is characterized by student individually or in group:

  • Performing computer word processing for text or graph presentation
  • Preparing power-point presentation
  • Searching for information on the internet
  • Brainstorming on ideas, problems and project plans
  • As needed, the teacher facilitating instruction, also giving individual instruction to serve individual needs.

DISCUSSION;

1. What can you say to the objection that an SCL environment can be noisy and unwieldy?

Well, it would be noisy or unwieldy if the teacher holding the class does not know how to manage the classroom.

2. How can SCL be fun, memorable and healthy?

Since it is a student centered learning, the attention is towards students allowing them to grow mentally, socially, emotionally and academically.

3. Share/discuss experiences on your e-mail activities.

My experience with email activities is not that bad. I’ve had to learn the basics of the mail first before I got what it says to be emailing.

4. Share/discuss experiences on internet surfing.

In my experience, surfing the net for the first time isn’t easy. I needed someone to assist me where to type, what to type or how to type. Now that, I am a little oriented about it, the fun has already started even if I am alone surfing the net, yet, most of the times, it would be best if you have someone with.
